The future of the web…

Ok, so I was enjoying my lunch, perusing the BBC News Tech pages, and I come across MESH. wtf?

I turns out to be Microsoft’s latest plan to conquer the web. Its a piece of software that allows you to store 5GBs worth of data on their servers and sync all your web enabled devices such as phones, PDAs, laptops and PCs. The client will also be cross platform(:-O).

Is this really necessary? Isn’t this already possible? Does anyone even care?

I’m not sure about the pricing structure (i.e will it be free?) but I’m staying well away. There’s not a chance I will put 5GBs of my data on Microsoft’s servers. There’s just no need.

I would love to hear all of your opinions on this.

I read about this today, a good idea in practise although lots of people offer this already.
If it were free and the data I wanted to backup wasn’t that important or private I would think about using it (but that would as far as I would take it).
I do like the idea of having a place where you can get all your data from any machine though and to have it backed up, but would they leave my files alone or would they read my documents and gather information about me, not that I have anything to hide ;)

Yeah, thats the point; the whole privacy issue. Why do we trust google to hold all our private details, but not Microsoft?

Also, I’m sure there are other systems that do this already, so it is already obsolete. Basically, to do this on your own network, I’m sure you could use NAS for all the main machines, and then something like iSync for the portable devices.

Hummm, I’ve had a quick look at it and they do seem to be a little light on the pricing details. If it were free and it worked really well then I’d probably give it a go, I can’t see how all the devices I want syncing would work with this though, not without a big phone bill.
